From the site:

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!

I’m making a freakin’ game!

REALLY...WHAT KIND OF GAME?

Socks Incorporated is about creating an avatar, a.k.a. a sock puppet, and telling a story together. The player follows the main character’s narrative while simultaneously participating in their own. The nature of the sock puppet avatar (a character brought to life by your hand) allows the player to experience real-world play without the fear of embarrassment or the limits of social conformities. Best of all, it’s free to play!

WEIRD....WHO SHOULD PLAY?

Everyone! Any man, woman, or child who can upload images and videos can play. The entry level is low, but the potential for personal expression and creativity is sky-high (or knee-high in the case of socks). The experience can be especially mind-opening for children who are generally taught story-telling skills and technology skills separately. Also, did we mention there is no fee to play?

WHY IS SOCKS INCORPORATED SO SPECIAL?

The format of this ARG is like none other. It is not played in real-time; meaning, you can play it, have a blast, then tell all of your friends to play it too! This will allow for a huge sock-puppet community that will share and comment on stories. When a player completes all of the main missions, he/she is given the opportunity to contribute with a fun mission of their own for the rest of their community. Many other wide-scale ARG’s are born from marketing campaigns.... this game is born from a desire to do something new with transmedia storytelling that is super duper fun.

SO YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE THIS EDUCATIONAL, INNOVATIVE, REVOLUTIONARY AND SUPER FUN GAME. WHAT’S THE CATCH?

There is no catch. We have big ideas for this game and plan on using every resource available. The more money we collect, the better the game will be! Six grand is what we need to make it happen, but for every dollar more we can make the game that much better for you to enjoy. And since we are working hard and being paid in joy currency, we hope you do it big.

OK FINE. BUT, THEN WHAT?

Looking forward, the web platform we are building for Socks Incorporated will be used for other ARGs that will use real-world experience, technology, and social media in the same way.

It’s game time.
